Last month saw Samsung introduce its new Galaxy Round, a smartphone with a curved display and a "Roll Effect" feature that allows users to view alerts and information by rocking the phone when its display is off. A new report claims that Samsung's not stopping its screen experiments there, though, as the company is reportedly cooking up another handset with a wraparound display.
Source speaking to Bloomberg say that Samsung is working on a new smartphone that wraps around the edges of the phone, enabling users to view messages, stocks and other information from an angle. The technology used will be an upgraded version of Youm, the tech that helped to create the aforementioned Galaxy Round's curved screen, and Samsung is reportedly working to allow each of the display's three sides to operate independently. Samsung doesn't yet have a release date for its wraparound phone, but one tipster suggests that it could arrive in the second half of 2014.
As we reach a point where smartphone displays can't get much larger and the internals that power phones are able to handle most tasks with ease, manufacturers are looking for other ways to make their products stand out. Creating devices with curved displays is certainly one way of doing that, especially since companies that invest in curved screens can use that tech in other growing categories, such as smartwatches.
It sounds like Samsung's wraparound smartphone may still be a ways off, but the idea of a three-sided screen is certainly an intriguing one, and it'll be interesting to see how such a device ends up performing.
