Republic Wireless announced way back in mid-September that it would be adding the Moto X to its lineup at a price of $299 sans commitment, but at the time it didn't give any information on when the thing would actually be going on sale. That time has finally come today, as Republic is now selling the Moto X on its website in both black and white flavors. This Moto X features the same spec list as other carrier models, meaning that buyers will be getting a 4.7-inch 720p display, 10-megapixel ClearPixel camera, 2-megapixel front-facing shooter and 16GB of included storage.
Once a Republic Wireless customer gets his or her Moto X, a rate plan decision must be made. Republic recently overhauled its slate of plan options with a new batch that starts out at $5 per month for unlimited Wi-Fi talk, text and data with no cellular coverage. From there, consumers can sign up for a $10 plan with unlimited Wi-Fi usage plus unlimited cellular talk and text, a $25 rate plan that includes unlimited talk, text and 3G data or a $40 per month plan that offers unlimited talk, text and 4G data.
The final major announcement made by Republic Wireless today relates to its messaging support. The Sprint MVNO has revealed that the Moto X and all future devices that hit its network will fully support MMS with all major carriers as well as over 70 regional operators.
The arrival of the Moto X is a big deal for both Motorola and Republic: It means that Moto's flagship phone is now available on another U.S. carrier, and it marks the arrival of the most high-end handset that Republic has offered to date. Republic's new slate of rate plans are also interesting, and when combined with the $299 no contract Moto X, they make for a pretty compelling option for anyone that spends the majority of their time around a Wi-Fi connection.
