Ever since it got a head-start,
courtesy of its ex-employer Nokia, Jolla has been working hard to bring
to market their vision of what the smartphone experience should be
like. After a year or so of struggle, Jolla has finally closed-in on the
finish line, as the first Sailfish OS-based phone appears to have
entered mass-production.
Should you decide to snatch one up,
then you should circle November 27, as that's the date of the release
that Jolla has given in an official tweet. There is some fine print,
however. For starters, it'll only be available unlocked for €399 (about
$540) on or off contract from Finnish carrier DNA. If you were an
early-backer, meaning that you ponied up a down payment during one of
the two pre-order phases, then you can rest assured knowing that Jolla
has vowed to prioritize the orders of its supporters.
Jolla's
phone may come off as kind of expensive, considering that it's powered
by a 1.4GHz dual-core Snapdragon 400 and has a 960x540 Gorilla Glass
2-protected display, but considering its deep-rooted ties with MeeGo OS,
it's probably safe to say that it won't lack a fan base. The rest of
the currently known specs include an 8-megapixel AutoFocus rear shooter
with LED flash, 1GB of RAM and 16GB of expandable storage, along with 4G
LTE connectivity. The Jolla phone tips the scales at 141g and measures
131x68x9.9mm. Another essential part of the package is the fact that the
smartphone comes with a whopping choice of 9 different colors, thanks
to the fact that the rear shell ('The Other Half') can be easily
swapped.
Perhaps most important of all, Android apps are Sailfish-compatible, which is great news.
Got a lingering question? The Jolla team has been pretty active on their Twitter handle, so have at it!
