Qualcomm's got a new king of its Snapdragon hill. The chip maker today introduced its Snapdragon 805 processor, a new chipset with a focus on enabling playback of Ultra HD 4K content on mobile hardware and TVs. The Snapdragon 805 is packing a Krait 450 quad-core CPU that's capable of running at speeds of up to 2.5GHz per core as well as a new Adreno 420 GPU that Qualcomm says is capable of providing up to 40 percent more graphics processing horsepower than its predecessor.
When it's put all together, the Snapdragon 805 boasts system-level Ultra HD support and is capable of capturing and playing back 4K video. The good news for folks that are already throwing their money at their display is that Qualcomm says that the Snapdragon 805 is already sampling and is expected to begin appearing in commercial hardware as soon as the first half of 2014.
Qualcomm isn't the only company that outed a new mobile processor today, as MediaTek took the wraps off of its new octa-core System on a Chip. Referred to as the first "true" octa-core mobile platform, the MediaTek MT6592 features eight CPU cores that are scalable and can run at speeds of up to 2GHz. Included with the MT6592 is an ARM-Cortex A7 processor paired with an ARM Mali GPU, multi-mode cellular modem and support for 802.11n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS and an FM tuner.
When it comes to performance, MediaTek says that its MT6592 SoC supports Ultra HD video playback, the H.265 and VP9 video codecs, full HD displays and 16-megapixel cameras. Just like its Snapdragon 805, the MT6592 could very well find its way into your pocket in the near future: MediaTek expects the chipset to begin appearing in Android 4.3 devices by the end of 2013, while Android 4.4 hardware powered by the MT6592 should begin hitting shelves in early 2014.
