A published report on
Wednesday says that Microsoft is looking to end the segregation that
forced Windows Store developers and developers for the Windows Phone
Store to take out separate subscriptions to develop applications for
both platforms. The report states that for just 1 cent, developers will
be able to take part in two-platform app development. After the merger,
individuals will be allowed to register as a developer with Microsoft
for both the Windows Store and Windows Phone Store for $19 a year and
teams will pay $99.
This is not a merger of the two app stores. There is speculation that the Windows Store will combine with the Windows Phone Store
at some point down the road. That rumor was confirmed months ago by
Terry Myerson, the Microsoft executive VP in charge of the software
firm's operating systems.
If this report turns out to be true,
this would be a small first step toward the eventual merger of Windows
and Windows Phone, something that has been rumored since the release of
Windows Phone 8.
